Not The Blooper Reel

Ususally I don’t go out on Friday, but yesterday I went to midtown to meet my parents again and before that I met a reader of TWM at a bar near my parents hotel. His name is Bill and he’s visiting from Georgia and wanted to meet for a beer or three, so who was I to refuse this offer. It’s always fun to meet readers of the blog when they come to town. So this is a little different than the usual random Blooper Reel that I usually do on Saturdays. Enjoy and have a great weekend, everyone!

Look at the line for the Mega Millions! Luckily I've already got my ticket and I hope it's the winning one. If so, we'll really start tripping here!

Okay, I chose this place to meet Bill at because it's just a few blocks from my parents hotel.

And happy hour has begun! Let's check it out.

It's nice in here, not your typical cookie cutter midtown Irish bar. This place is the real deal.

Large booths line the wall opposite from the bar.

Maureen, the pretty bartender served me up a beer. Love her smile!

Here's a shot from the other end of the bar.

And here's Bill, who's in town from Georgia. Bill's been reading my blogs since the 365 Bars blog and he's what I call a "silent reader." He's never commented, but reads the blogs religiously which I appreciate. We had a few beers and a nice chat about New York, bars, blogs and before you knew it, I had to get to parents hotel. Great to meet you Bill, and let's have more beers the next time you're in the city!

And here I'm making my way back to my parents hotel.

And here's the old finger on the spy hole trick. It never gets old!

And through the magic of the internet you're transported to our dinner destination, Shun Lee. Our favorite Chinese restaurant on the Upper West Side.

Cheers from the Wombachers!

The highlight of going to Shun Lee for me is always seeing the "Chicken With Three Different Nuts" on the menu! Have a great weekend everyone!

Bonus Birthday Wishes for “Boris!”
I found out via Gidget’s blog that TWM in-house artist, “Boris” had a birthday this week. “Boris” has been a great friend to me through the years and has done banners and design work on all my blogs and has really helped me out a lot. So take this time to wish my friend and brother, “Boris” a happy birthday! And “Boris” is also the man behind the music on DJ Gidget’s “Secret Weapon” show, he picks the tunes and DJ Gidget spins the discs, check it out at Woody Radio where there’s a lot of other great shows as well, including DJ Lokie! “Boris” has also taken up photography with a vengeance this year and has taken some fantatstic photos, check out some of his work here. Happy birthday, Daddio!

I love Shun Lee. It's like a trip to 1979.

Your dad, in that red sweater, always winds up reminding me of Bobby Knight ....

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

When Marty's Dad throws chairs around the restaurant, it always reminds me of Bobby Knight.

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercsp

I hope Jerry didn't choke and punch anybody at the restaurant !

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

The man in the red always defeats Shun Lee.

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercsp

@Fat Al: I hear you on that! It's our favorite Chinese restaurant!

@GENE: Being a sports retard I had to Bobby Knight o see what you meant!

@csp: I sat Jerry at a booth, so no chairs were thrown!

@GENE: No punches were thrown, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

@csp: Ha! I think it's the ponytail that gives Ken his strength. The Sampson syndrome.

@TWM .... I'm surprised you didn't know who Bobby Knight was/is ? .... he's a legend - and a really good guy - (don't let a few anger issues fool you!) ....... hopefully your dad can keep everything in check this weekend ! ENJOY !

Your parents are as adorable as ever :)

I was half afraid to click the surprise link (hoping that I wouldn't find a picture of three nuts) Whewwww. What a relief :)

Chicken with three different nuts? Sounds like a rooster with testosterone issues....

@Bobby D: It was great to meet Bill, a faithful reader since the 365 days blog!

@GENE: I had heard the name, but didn't know who he was. A few drinks and my dad has no anger issues, something I inherited!

@roadsidewonders: Thanks! And I'm glad that you appreciated my non-nut surprise link!

@Jaws: That video's too funny! Thanks for the linkage!

Nice to see happy faces all around.......but your Mom.......be still my heart......I'll just have to keep my feelings about her close to my heart....especially if your pop is ANYTHING like B.Knight.
And EVERY time you do that eyehole finger bit I get a little burst of laughter.
And maybe Marty you have stumbled into the first offshoot of this blog.......The Marty Motel. Get everybody who reads the blog to come to NY, and you'll not only show them around, but give 'em a place to bed down. (NOT your apartment.....maybe over at Mistah Chittle's.....I'm SURE he wouldn't mind.)

A Great Saturday post Daddio!
Try and keep your folks out of trouble while they are there.
Goos 'seeing' them.
Thanks for the Birthday wishes.
My 22 year sober anniversary was last Tuesday.
(without THAT one, I wouldn't have had the following 22 Birthdays... No Shit)
Yes, I have 'taken to' Photography, but there are 5 albums before that link.
Poke around, as I think some of those are far better representation of this 'rookie'.
I've only been immersed in it since last September.
Have a great weekend with Ma and Pa W!

Shun Lee? I wonder where Tennessee Tuxedo's Asian counterpart is hiding?
(maybe it's the 'Peking Penguin')

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter"Boris"

Good to know about McGee's ... have never been ... and kinda thought it was a cookie-cutter joint...

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEV Grieve

That bar looks nice inside! What was that painting by the booths?

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteronemorefoldedsunset

@DrBOP: Thanks for the nice words about my mom and don't worry, my dad is as far from what I've read about Bobby Knight as possible. Glad you like the spyhole joke, just another larf I can't let go of! And the Marty Motel is too funny! I'll run it by Shawn tonight at his birthday party!

@"Boris:" Happy birthday and Happy 22 years of sobriety! Quite an inspiration to all of us and glad you're still with us, Daddio! And I encourage everyone to poke around all of his photo albums, there's great work to be seen! Regarding the Asian Tennessee Tuxedo: ha ha ha!

@EV Grieve: I thought the same thing and only picked it because it was handy for Bill and I to meet and it was a pleasant surprise, not cookie-cutter at all. I think I'll go back for a Cheeseburger Saturday Night!

@onemorefoldedsunset: I'm not sure what that painting was, this gives me a good excuse to go back! I'll let you know in a week or so!

McGee's is very impressive, relaxed and non traditional Irish pub, a good thing. Nothing wrong with Irish pubs its just that there are so many that look like each other. McGee's should remove half of their TV sets, its a little overkill those damn boxes, how many do you need? Remember on 365, the bar with no TV's? "On the Rock" over in Hell's Kitchen,,,,maybe revisit after your parents leave town. Still can't get over those large cocktails they drink,,,my kind of folks.

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAl

Great to see your parents on the Blog – Please be sure to tell them I said hello

March 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNeighbor Deloy

@Al: I think I'm going back to McGee's for Cheeseburger Saturday Night and take a closer look at the place. I hear you on the TV sets (although Gene will disagree!) And I forgot all about On the Rocks! I will definitely go back there, thanks for reminding me of that place!

@Deloy: I'll pass along your greetings to my folks for sure.

Shun Le has been my favorite Chinese restaurant for a long time - love that giant dragon that winds around the top of the dining area, plus the simple black and white just works so well there - and you really can't beat the food. I rarely make reservations, so always have that moment of nervousness when I step in and go up to the little reception booth in front, cause I know they will ask, and when I say no, the girl gets that 'hmmm' look and starts looking down at her reservation schedule thing - but she always finds a table anyhow. Pretty sure she just does it for affect, but it's one of those little things I've come to love.

Plus I once saw Tara Reid uhhh..how can I put this... reveal herself below the equator when getting out of her booth to leave. I left a really nice tip that day!

April 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJAZ

@JAZ: Ha ha ha! Love that Tara Reid story, I wonder if she even owns any underwear!

As a Buckeye, your dad in his red sweater vest reminds ME of Jim Tressel. So, did you get any tattoos?

April 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@Biff: I'll never tell! Plus, I have no idea who Jim Tressel is!

Shun Lee looks delish!

I see that you are enjoying a Tsing Tao there Marty. The beer that is a must with Chinese food!

@Tiki Bar Susie: I love Tsing Tao beer and always order it at Chinese restaurants!
