A Bar Crawl In Queens With Gene From The BBC
Okay, usually I take Friday off and get ready for next week’s activities and put up a Blooper Reel today. The only problem was, I didn’t have that many Blooper photos to post. Then I remembered TWM friend, commenter and one third of the famed BBC (Baltimore Bar Crawlers), Gene Rubbico was coming to town this weekend. I couldn’t go out with him last night, but I asked him to take photos and send them in and that’s exactly what he did and here they are!
The train pulls into the city.
Sorry about this Al...
But you just can't go through Penn Station without getting a giant beer and a Papaya dog! A perfect start to a bar crawling day!
Walter's Bar used to be here and now it's vacant. What a shame!
Happily, Billymarks West is still in business, time to really start this bar crawl.
Three amigos in Billymarks: Mark, Mike and Skippy.
Here's the Flying Puck, which is just a block from Penn Station.
You gotta love the floor in here!
31st and Northern Blvd. In Queens.
Home sweet home for the next three nights.
And we're off to some bars in Queens! (Marty's note: In an email, Gene told me he was going to do all Queens from here on in and I replied, "That's what Freddie Mercury said and he wasn't talking about his band!")
The Mad Donkey Beer Bar and Grill.
Getting sliders for a snack. Just got a Yuengling draft that tasted like crap. Traded it in for a Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. Much better!
Veronica's, a classic place with great signage!
And now we're at the Sunswick bar.
Watermelons and is that a CBBM cousin in the upper left?
As night falls, it's time for the Tippin Inn.
Here's Chris, who looks like he's tipped a few at the Tippin Inn!
They have the cleanest bathroom I've ever seen in a bar and two kinds of air fresheners!
Time for another snack, a mushroom slice and a garlic knot to soak up some of the suds!
Next stop, Cronin & Phelan.
And back to Tippin Inn for a nightcap or three.
Great bar crawl, Gene! Thanks for the photos and narrative! Check in tomorrow for Gene and I on a Cheeseburger Saturday Night adventure!

Bonus Gidget Photo!
DJ Gidget left a comment last week when I went to The House Of Oldies and mentioned a dress she wore for lipsyncing Nancy Sinatra songs called, “The Boots Dress.” I asked her to send in a picture of her wearing this dress and here it is. Looking great, Gidget! And don’t forget to tune in to the “Secret Weapon” the show where “Boris” picks the tunes and Gidget spins them. It’s on Woody Radio and you can listen right now, so do it! Thanks for sending in the photo, Gidget!

The Sunswick bar photo looks like a Norman Rockwell painting...the only thing missing would be three old cuffers lounging just outside the bar shooting the breeze. Great photo of Gidget, but she looks like she's standing behind a sheet of Saran Wrap...sealed for your protection? Or perhaps a DJ Gidget action figure still in the box...
Funny reply about Freddie Mercury,,,made my day. Gene knows great old bars, I really liked that Tippin inn and Veronica's. I once did a bar crawl at Fell's Point, probably the greatest one day bar crawl place in the world because you just walk a few steps to the next bar,,,,or crawl. I hope to do a bar hop with you and Gene soon.
great job by gene! lots of bars and great photos! and speaking of photos, cool shot of gidget, ooh la la!!
@Jaws: You're right about the Sunswick, a classic looking place! I'm not sure what's in front of Gidget, but it's a great photo!
@Al: Glad you got a laugh out of the Freddie comment! And yes, Gene is a seasoned bar crawler and can pick some great spots! Where is Fell's Point?
@Bobby D: I agree both with a great job by Gene and a cool photo of Gidget!
Aaaaaaaahhhhhh..... long wonderful sleep :) ready for round 2 today !
Way to go gene. Cool to see my old neighborhood. I've thrown more than a few back in Veronica's Bar. Great spot.
Do you think this crew at Billymarks would have been acceptable at the Standard? I don’t think so. Real men.
@GENE: Thanks again for doing this! See you tonight!
@Jason: Cool that Gene hit your old neighborhood! Veronica's looks like a great place, I'll have to visit there in the future!
@Duncester: I agree 100%!
Awesome. I don't care for a $10 watermelon.
Semmi: But where in New York can one find a woman with grace, elegance, taste and culture? A woman suitable for a king.
Prince Akeem, and Semmi: Queens!
@Clacky: But it's a pre-summer watermelon, hence the lofty price tag!
@csp: Ha ha ha! Good one!
@Jason ...... I love Queens. I stay out here all the time when I come to town. The hotels are a 1/3 of the price in Manhattan - and the neighborhoods are great. I should move here !
Just noticed the surprise link ! .... great night that day with Clacky & Shannon ! ... hope they come back soon !
@GENE: Glad you saw that surprise link! Cheers to Clacky and Shannon!
That's the funniest Freddy Mercury joke I've heard in a long time, but after getting a look at those bars out in Queens I might just be doing queens from here on out too.
@randall: Glad you liked that joke! And I hear you about the Queens bars, I need to hit some of them!
These places look so damn appealing. I probably could manage getting there, but the return trip might be a problem. So I have to postpone my visits until my chauffeur gets released on parole.
The Flying Puck - great place to watch a Rangers' playoff win if you can't get into the Garden.
Nice dress.
@Uncle Waltie: Let me know when he gets released and we'll hit these bars!
@DaveW: The Flying Puck is probably about the best bar on that block. And I agree about Gidget and her dress, very cool!
