Cash Mob At St. Mark's Bookshop

As I posted on Saturday’s Blooper Reel, there’s a cash mob happening over at St. Mark’s Bookshop today at one in the afternoon and then people are going for drinks at The International Bar. It’s a little early for me, but it’s for a good cause and I’m hoping a good crowd shows up, only one way to find out and that’s to get over there!

It's a nice springy day, so I thought we'd walk over there.

And here we are, as usual I'm early and I don't see anyone else here.

So we might as well do a little window shopping while we wait.

I just read an excerpt of that Carole King book in New York magazine, I enjoyed that, so I think that will be one of my purchases.

And here's my friend and star of the first Bar Exam here at TWM, Paul Scanlon.

And here's Goggla and Ed, okay, it's not an official mob yet, but close enough.

And it's through the doors we go.

Ed and Goggla immediately started checking out the selections in St. Mark's.

Here's some cool coffee table books on display, many of these titles you won't find on Amazon or at a Barnes & Noble store.

Kind of an ironic title, considering the reason we're here!

There's always a sales table in the back loaded with books, most of them are priced at under ten bucks, some great deals to be had here!

There's also a great selection of magazines and again, there's titles here you won't find at most other book stores.

Here's some cool postcards on display.

Here's Louis and Dena who were here for the cash mob, Dena is a reader of Jeremiah Moss and read about it at his blog.

I met Steven, who it turns out is a longtime friend of Paul Scanlon's. Nice to see a decent crowd showing up to support St. Mark's!

This is Ben Rossen, who stopped by for the cash mob. Ben is the co-founder of smallknot, a company that helps to get funding for businesses. Maybe they can help out St. Mark's!

And I ran into One More Folded Sunset, who always cringes when my camera comes out. Luckily she had two books to shield her from the TWM lens!

There's a familiar face over there...

My friend and frequent TWM guest star, Shawn Chittle! All of a sudden I'm hungry for a bagel!

Okay, time to get in line and pay for my books.

And here's Benjamin, behind the counter writing up the sales.

And if you're on Twitter, you can follow them here.

After buying books, some of us came over to the International Bar for a few Sunday afternoon drinks.

And here's a stack of books with a can of Schafer's acting as the cherry on top! It was great to see everyone who showed up, and if you couldn't make it or don't live in New York, you can always purchase something online.

I was hoping Uncle Waltie would show up, but I didn't see him. He may have had a rough Saturday night, so maybe he'll make it next time. Till then, "Sip Ahoy" to Uncle Waltie and all of you out there! See you tomorrow!

Saturday Night Cheeseburger at Arthur's Tavern

Live, from New York, it’s Saturday Night Cheeseburger! This week’s host is Arthur’s Tavern and a guest appearance by TWM reader, Peter Chu and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher! And now, please welcome this week’s host, all the way from Hoboken, New Jersey, Arthur’s Tavern!

I've exchanged several emails with Peter Chu, who's been reading my blogs way back from the 365 Bars days and he suggested that I should come out to Hoboken, New Jersey and check out Arthur's Tavern sometime. I actually tried to go to Arthur's last year when I was doing MAD, but the trains were screwed up and I ended up going to the Hollywood Diner instead. I had good luck with the Path trains last week, so I told Peter I'd meet him at Arthur's tonight, so it's down into the subway we go.

There's a familiar sign, didn't we just do this a week ago?

Just three quick train stops and baboom, here we are in Hoboken. It's a nice day and there's a lot of people out and about here!

I've got my old school gps guide programmed to get us to Arthur's from here, hopefully I won't get lost too many times before I find it.

Amazingly I found Arthur's in about ten minutes without getting lost at all. Hoboken's pretty easy to get around. There's just one problem though...

I told Peter I'd meet him in front of Arthur's at 6:30 and of course I'm crazy early and it's just 5:30, so I've got an hour to kill. What should I do...

Hey, this looks like a good place not only to kill an hour, but to kill a few pre-dinner beers as well.

It's nice inside.

And it's even nicer after I meet pretty and friendly bartender Lauren, who happily serves up a beer.

Okay, fast-forward an hour and a few beers later and here we are back at Arthur's and there's Peter! Time to begin Saturday Night Cheeseburger!

Arthur's is a real old-school steakhouse, love the checkered floor and table cloths.

The walls are covered with vintage mirrors and pictures.

Ceiling fans with lamps in them hang overhead and illuminate the restaurant.

And of course the ceiling is tin. The mark of a classic place.

Here's a couple of chefs back in the kitchen area.

And here's a couple of plates of Arthur's signature dinner's, steak and their famous homemade potatoes.

Arthur's is a lot bigger than I thought, there's several dining rooms to eat in. As you can see, it's a popular spot on a Saturday night.

And here's the table Peter and I settled into.

Our friendly waitress Claudia brings the first course of the dinner.

And shortly after the main course arrives! I got a cheddar cheese burger with carmelized onions and bacon and a serving of Arthur's home made potatoes.

Peter opted for a little simpler burger and got one topped with American cheese and an order of fries.

The burger was delicious, but just like last week, it was so big I had to put it down and eat it with a fork and knife.

I want to thank Peter, he generously picked up the tab for dinner, so I told him I'd buy us a nightcap somewhere. As we left Arthur's nighttime had fallen on Hoboken.

Peter guided us to this bar a few  blocks away, Louise and Jerry's.

It's a nice dark bar and not too crazy on a Saturday night, which I appreciate.

And Pat the bartender serves up dessert!

And a glance out the window and it's time to head back home. Thanks again to Peter for meeting me and for picking up the dinner check, the next one's on me!

Bonus Photo From Duncester!

After seeing this Hoboken post, TWM reader and frequent guest star, The Duncester sent in this photo he took from Hoboken last Thursday. Here's what he has to say about the shot: "Last Thursday evening, on my way out to Jersey via the Path Train and NJ Transit, I took this shot of the Freedom Tower from Hoboken, now at 100 plus stories (total will be 104 stories). Thought it might be a nice fit for your Hoboken burger post, especially for your out of state audience." Great photo, Duncester, thanks for sending it in and hope to see you soon!

Blooper Reel

Saturday is here which can mean only one thing, we’ve lived to see another weekend! And, of course, it also means it’s time to roll out the Blooper Reel of photos that I took throughout the week and didn’t make it into a post. And so, here we go, have a great Saturday everyone and tune into Cheeseburger Saturday Night tomorrow!

You say, "Ugg," I say, ugh!

333, the mark of Satan Junior!

How many times do I have to tell you, I don't have a plow!

Without the use of an opposable thumb, dogs are going to find it hard to operate this treat machine. Plus, where are they going to get a quarter? I think this is animal cruelty!

The ironic thing about this photo is that a woman was holding a screaming child as I took it. It was all I could do to refrain from a citizen's arrest!

A toilet shot from Milano's where we spent Easter Sunday. I was amazed at how clean it was and I liked the Cheap Trick tiling in the bathroom.

I took a few Polaroid shots this week and here they are. And yes, I realized I left the "a" off pizza after I scanned it in.

Somewhere there's a "lick her and whine" joke in this shot, but I couldn't come up with one.

And a shot of the Papaya Dog near Bleecker.

Bonus Cash Mob at St. Mark’s Bookshop Information!

Jeremiah Moss announced a cash mob this Sunday to help out St. Mark’s Bookshop, which once again is having money difficulties. You can read Jeremiah’s post here. The cash mob is scheduled to take place at 1PM on Sunday (tomorrow) and then drinks afterward at Bar 82. If you can make it that would be great, hope to see people there tomorrow!
