Lost and Found
This somewhat Howdy-Dooyish looking fellow was down in the subway playing a weird instrument that was kind of excruciating to the eardrums. It sounded like a squadron of amplified bees flying into a zither. I gave him a couple bucks, but he wouldn't stop, so I left.
The good news about doing this blog in daytime hours is there's not much waiting for trains, like at night. As soon as I walked down, bang-zoom, here's the Q train!
The bad news is there's a lot of people on them. Oh well, it's only three stops, I can stand for that.
Well, it took a little longer than I thought, the train stopped twice for about five minutes each. Now I'm trying to get out of the train station and it's taking forever! One twist and turn after another! It's like that scene from Spinal Tap!
Finally I'm outside! Hello, Cleveland...I mean, Brooklyn. Okay, those that know me, know I don't have a clue when it comes to directions, I can't read maps and I don't know Brooklyn that well. I wandered around, asked for directions from at least six different people, all directing me in opposite directions and got hopelessly lost! One guy in a deli even told me it was two blocks away. I went there and there was no Lafayette Ave. So I went back and told him there's no Lafayette Ave. where he told me and his reply was to say I probably wasn't looking hard enough! Mother of sweet fuck! I may never leave Manhattan again!
Finally after wandering around for what seemed like an eternity, I stumbled upon my destination: Mullanes! I'm not sure what kind of a bar it is and at this point, I don't care. They have a free buffet from 5 to 7 PM and I need a beer right now! I'll post photos of the place in the next post.

Marty, it’s between Elliott Pl & Portland Ave, next time ask me first.
Smart Phones ..... they have maps ... GPS ... satellite tracking ......... you'd never get lost again ! I've always had a good sense of direction -- and I can picture maps in my head -- but my phone has led to a whole new level of NYC pub crawling -- don't know how I'd live without it !
All this unacustomed daytime action must be hard on an old vampire like you Marty...have you begun to sparkle yet? Next time that Zither guy won't stop playing his weird bee music at you, just bite him in the neck and use your magical vampire powers to make him stop!
Marty, next time you come to Brooklyn let me know! My husband grew up in Park Slope (before it gentrified) and we can show you some good places. It's not so hard to find your way around, honest!
@Martin: I should start emailing you and getting directions!
@GENE: I just don't want to take the time to learn smart phones, in addition to being directionless, I'm technically-challenged as well!
@Jaws: Ha ha ha! Love the vampire idea!
@Katrink: Will do, thanks for the offer!
Marty ... you are not technically challenged ..... you use those goofy MAC laptops .... and entertain the world with this blog ......... you can use a phone !
@GENE: I guess what it boils down to is I just don't want one of those things!
only time i was ever lost in new york was in fucking brooklyn.. and the directions the person gave me out got me at the Connecticut border..
is that even possible.. i still have no idea how i got there...
@Gidget: Brooklyn confuses me too! That's crazy that you ended up in Connecticut! Talk about bad directions!
That place looks like a giant British telephone booth.
@Biff: Ha ha ha! It does! I wonder if that was intentional?
Being a lifelong habituate of the greatest of the outer boroughs, if you ever venture into the hinterlands of Brooklyn again drop me a line as there are several places on and off the beaten path I know of which definitely fit your style.
@DaveW: Will do, send me an email if you can, I don't have your email, do I?
@Gidget - Was that you?
I'm on your mailing list, but just sent it again.
@DaveW: Thanks, my mailing list is so huge I forget who's on it!
